FriendFeed- beginning of the end?

Today was a big day in the social media world; Facebook acquired FriendFeed.

Being a big fan of FriendFeed because it is a small network with a lot of scientists who use it for the fact that it is simple and not bloated with distracting features, this is concerning.  The employees are now at Facebook working apparently as R&D, to improve Facebooks microblogging functionality.

The fate of FriendFeed is now up in the air.  It seems likely that the community will dissolve in the near future.

On the plus side, Facebook may get a boost in features and more use from the science crowd.  I still only use it for keeping in touch with personal connections, but perhaps it is worth another look.  Time will tell.

Sharing files on FriendFeed

According to today’s FF blog post, you can now attach files to posts.  With the number of scientists on FF, this will undoubtedly make it a great repository for research papers.

This has sparked a couple of debates on sharing papers in FF.
